Inaugural week of Fashion in Kigali, Rwanda takes place October 14th, 2016 at the Serena Hotel

A group of established fashion designers in Rwanda have come together to form the Collective RW, and with the introduction of a yearly event called ‘Collective RW Week of Fashion, aim to promote national and regional fashion as well as to encourage collaboration amongst designers throughout Africa.

Collective RW hope to strengthen, promote and develop Rwandan fashion by fostering talent, originality and local representation on the continent and on the international fashion scene. Partnering with LDJ Productions, a New York based full service event and production company responsible for producing New York and Miami fashion weeks, the hope is to deliver an event that meets high standards and promotes ‘Made in Rwanda’. The agency has also been working with both the Rwandan and Uganda fashion industry with mentorship, training and internships.

The fashion show taking place on Friday October 14th, at the Serena Hotel in Kigali will feature and celebrate the work of Rwandan designers Haute Baso, Sonia Mugabo, House of Tayo, Inzuki designa and Inco Fashion. In addition, the likes of other designers like Amizero, Uzi collections and Naked Ape from South Africa will also be showcasing on the night.

The Collective RW week of fashion 2016 is supported by main sponosor ‘Journal’, Rwanda’s first video streaming platform as well as the national airline carrier ‘Rwandair’.

‘Journal’ is a community centered platfom to promote culture and inspires innovation through quality storytelling. The  goal is to design platforms that inspire artists to document and share their stories with the world.

Leading up to the main event, the organisers are also hosting seminars with topics covering the international fashion market, emerging designer presentations, workshops on pattern making and business skills. This is to increase and extend knowledge of and access into the fashion industry, thereby supporting job creation and promotion of Made in Rwanda.
